Forestry & Climate Change

Yorwoods, the RDI managed woodland initiative, have obtained funding from the RDPE funded Lantra Landskills programme to deliver two pilot ‘Forestry & Climate Change’ Training Courses in Yorkshire in February 2012. 

In recent years the forestry sector in the UK has been confronted with a number of growing threats from the effects of climate change. An increasing number of pests and diseases such as Red Band Needle Blight and Phytophthora Ramorum, and extreme weather conditions including wind and unseasonal temperatures, are causing foresters to reassess their woodlands and how they manage them.

Now for the first time in the UK, foresters can obtain the skills and knowledge to cope with this situation, and even use it to their advantage where possible.  PLUS, the course leads to a LANTRA Customised Award as evidence of professional competence in this emerging subject.

The course consists of a number of sessions taught over a two day period: –

• Session 1: Climate Change – facts for foresters
• Session 2: Designing for climate change
• Session 3: Managing for climate change
• Session 4: Mitigation of climate change and its effects

Sessions 2 and 3 are supported by practical site visits to new planting sites and mature woodland.

Cost includes all training materials, refreshments and Lantra Certification
