LEADER Funding for the North York Moors, Coast and Hills.

March 30, 2009

The LEADER programme, funded by the European Union and Defra, and managed by Yorkshire Forward is intended to provide a bottom up approach to address needs identified by local communities. The North York Moors, Coast and Hills area is defined as the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills, Howardian Hills and the Vale of Pickering, along with the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast from Saltburn to Scalby.

The LEADER programme in this area has the potential to provide funding to a wide range of community based initiatives.  Envisaged activities include improved understanding of local heritage and historic assets, biodiversity/environmental enhancement projects, support for community training/skills development, village enhancements and access to services.  Within this, potential projects can include forestry related schemes such as community woodlands, encouraging and developing the sustainable use of natural resources, or pilot projects around woodland management, advice or training programmes.

All interested groups are now being encouraged to prepare for the opening of the programme on 21st April by contacting programme staff, or by visiting the website and familiarising themselves with the range of documents and guidance/information sheets available, particularly the 12 LEADER priorities found in Information Sheet 3.  Project Idea Forms can be submitted to leader@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk to give an outline of the proposed project.  These will then be assessed on a regular basis.  Projects that fit with the key areas for investment will then be invited to submit a full application.

All information including the Project Idea Form can be downloaded from the website – www.moors.uk.net/leader or by contacting Mike Horrocks – LEADER Programme Manager on m.horrocks@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk or Amy Thomas – LEADER Programme Officer on a.thomas@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk
