New Rural Economy Grant launched

March 1, 2012

Details of the new Rural Economy Grant (REG) scheme have now been released by Defra. The £60 million scheme will provide grants to enable significiant ‘game changing’ investment in rural businesses including the forestry sector. Forestry contractors, woodfuel suppliers and woodland owners are all able to apply.

Grants are available from £25,000 up to circa £1 million, up to a maximum of 40% of total project cost. Within forestry, projects will be supported that fall under the themes of ‘modernising supply chains, developing new products and developing the market for high quality woodfuel’. The Outline Application phase is now open with a deadline of April 30th 2012 to submit an initial proposal. More information is available on the Defra website below including the relevant application forms and Applicants Handbook which provides detailed guidance.

The REG complements the Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme (FFIS) which is already running and provides small grant support (between £2,500 and £25,000) to forestry businesses and woodland owners.

Further information on both schemes can be found at Northwoods are able to provide support to businesses in the North East wishing to apply for grant funding. To find out more or discuss a project idea contact Jill Platten at or call 01670 513292.
