Woodland Initiatives

Established in 1997 and 1999 respectively, the Yorwoods and Northwoods initiatives are cornerstones of our portfolio in northern England.  Both woodland initiatives are public-private partnerships where we provide staff, management and a host for a wide range of projects.  Providing a portfolio of complimentary, high-quality training, business support and associated projects and services, Northwoods and Yorwoods are among the UK’s most successful woodland initiatives.

Both initiatives play a key role in communicating the messages of the public sector to the farming and forestry businesses of Yorkshire and the North East, whilst at the same time providing a route for rural businesses to influence the regional agendas for farming and forestry.  Northwoods and Yorwoods have excellent track records of delivery, innovation and value for money and enjoy the continued confidence and support of their various partner agencies.  Since their establishment, both initiatives have channelled well over £1m of support into farming and forestry businesses in northern England.

Activities include:

  • Information, advice and guidance (IAG) on forest management and new planting schemes including advice on grants to landowners
  • IAG on forest management certification and chain of custody
  • Business development support including business planning and raising finance for forest based and timber using businesses
  • Timber and forest product marketing initiatives
  • Training initiatives
  • Comprehensive signposting service
  • Woodfuel supply chain development work including woodfuel market development and training
  • Shows and events across the region to promote and raise awareness of the sector
