Wildfire Training

Through our work with Northumberland Wildfire Group it became clear that training was a key priority for the group members.  Based on this demand RDI have developed two wildfire training courses, designed to meet the needs of the land based sector. The courses are based on internationally approved wildfire training courses and adapted to suit the needs of the UK.

Our trainer, Ethan Bigelow, has significant practical experience of wildfire fighting from his time as a wildfire officer with the US Forest Service. This has given him the technical background needed to present on such a specialised topic.

Basic Wildfire Fighting

Aim: To provide the trainee with an introduction to wild fire behaviour and suppression techniques and strategies. Safe and effective response to a wildfire requires individuals and teams of fire fighters who are well prepared, can access a fire area safely, use a range of fire fighting equipment, implement a range of suppression techniques and react safely to changing wildfire behaviour.  The course is aimed at anyone who may be asked to assist on a fire ground, and is targetted at the needs of land managers, rangers etc.
Duration: The course is designed to be run as a one day theoretical course with a practical component covering the use of equipment found at a wildfire incident.
Accreditation:  Trainees receive a certificate of attendance from Lantra Awards

Advanced Wildfire Fighting

Aim: To build upon the fundamental knowledge presented in the Basic Wildfire Fighting course. It will introduce advanced concepts of fire behaviour and wildfire suppression techniques. The course is designed give experienced fire fighters the skills to manage a team of fire fighters and manage a wildfire incident.
Duration: The course is designed to be run as a one day theoretical course with a wildfire scenario as the practical component.
Accreditation: This course is not accredited at present but we are working towards trainees receiving a certificate of attendance from Lantra Awards.
