Fire Groups

A wildfire group is a partnership of public and private organisations that work together on a range of activities to reduce the risk of wildfire occurrence and promote preparation of an effective response when they do occur. RDI are at the forefront of developing the concept of wildfire groups and promoting their establishment across the UK. Each wildfire group reflects the aims of local partners, vegetation, land ownership and risks in each area, but generally groups work towards:

  • Prevention: Reducing the occurrence of wildfires
  • Preparation: Having the essential information and equipment ready in the event of a fire
  • Effective response: Training on wildfire fighting tactics and command and control systems

Through our experience we have identified a number of criteria that we believe contribute to a successful group:

  • Quality partnership working facilitated by an independent organisation is key to share knowledge skills and mutual understanding
  • Dedicated staff time for delivery and project management maintains momentum and enables group members to get on with their ‘day job’
  • External funding to provide the necessary resources needed to deliver the groups aims

RDI can take on a number of roles relating to wildfire groups, including sourcing and applying for funding, acting as secretariat, facilitating partnership working, project management and training delivery.  RDI currently project manage Wildfire Groups in Northumberland, Cumbria and North Yorkshire and are working with partnerships in County Durham, South East England, Wales and Northern Ireland to develop groups in those areas.

If you think RDI could assist in any way with the development of a fire group in your area, please contact Martin Glynn.
