RDI are working in close partnership with the Global Fire Monitoring Centre (GFMC) and the International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) on the production of the European Wildland Fire Management Handbook. The project is a response to the recognition that there is a critical gap in knowledge and training provision in wildland and forest fire situations in Western, Baltic and Eastern European countries. This places fire-fighters at risk due to a lack of understanding of forest fire behaviour, fire management training and risk awareness.
As lead body for Eurofire, RDI secured EU Leonardo da Vinci funding for a 2 year trans-European vocational training project to produce a the handbook. The project has formed a collaborative, trans-European partnership of research and training institutions, fire service employees, employers and rural and land based businesses. The handbook provides a coherent and comprehensive training resource for the control and management of wildland and forest fires for fire and rescue services across Europe.
The project builds on RDI’s significant training and wildfire expertise and helps address the gaps in knowledge and understanding by creating a new training resource. The handbook is written by experts from Global Fire Monitoring Centre, evaluated by industry practitioners and overseen by International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF), the key sectoral organisation for fire and rescue service personnel.
