BioeNErgy Delivers Real Benefit to Rural Businesses

Park End Farms, based in Northumberland, secured funding in round two of the bioeNErgy programme to further develop and strengthen their woodchip operations.  Their farm business diversified two years ago by purchasing a chipper to supply their own woodfuel requirements and to meet the needs of other chip suppliers across the region by offering a contract chipping service.

The business developed and expanded in such a way over two years that a more efficient and productive chipper was required to keep up with demand.  Investment though bioeNErgy enabled the business to make a massive investment, not only in the business but also in local woodfuel supply chains.

Since buying the chipper earlier in the year, 600 tonnes of wood has been chipped for woodfuel markets to date.  The investment has allowed the business to make operations more efficient and productive which has allowed the business to expand.  Already an additional two contracts have been secured as a direct consequence of upgrading the chipping operation, securing jobs as a result.
